The RD8 index makes it possible to give an objective measurement of good design. For example, a RD8 product review will measure the health of a given mechanical design by assessing the CAD model of the product and hereby the robustness of the mechanism design.

 

The higher the score, the more complex a design. The aim is, in the first place, to know the robustness of the design. Like a weight loss – you need to know your weight to know how much weight you have lost.

 

The RD8 Index is an objective measure to track your performance and trim your product to an ideal state.

RD8 Robust Design Disciplines

In RD8 Robust Engineering System (RES) and RD8 Index – we redefine robust design – by coverage of 8 crucial disciplines of mechanical design – while keeping the design process and outcome as simple and structured as possible.

The 8 disciplines of a robust design review are:

Kinematics – The foundation. Kinematic design on the system and detailed level. Meaning kinematic design of product architecture and robust mechanism design in the detail.

Functions – Product function is vital! Ensure healthy concepts with low sensitivity – high robustness.

Couplings – Reduce complexity! Remove dependencies by decoupling.

Tolerances – Ensure short tolerance chains and feasible tolerances (to match process capabilities)

Structure – Ensuring match between requirements, function, cost, and mechanical properties.

Materials – Ensure the right selection of materials – their complexity and link to adjacent components.

DFM – Ensure optimized manufacturability of parts

RD8 offers different depths of product reviews. Often a look under the hood can quickly reveal potentials. For a review of different product categories, it is recommended to choose the solid or light. However, for a ramp-up of a critical new product, it is recommended to go with a full review.

The RD8 product review assesses the different robust design disciplines. However, a 360 review is more extensive than a light review.
